ART REACH 2012 BANNER FESTIVAL REGISTRATION:
Art for All Seasons
Art Reach of Mid Michigan will again host the colorful Festival of Banners which will feature brightly painted banners on light poles in downtown Mt. Pleasant, Shepherd, Winn and in Union Township on Pickard Street from June through November 2012.
The first 166 banner submissions received will be the banners that will be painted. Last year they had 423 submissions and so in the interest of being fair to all artists, Art Reach is trying this selection method. Entry deadline for banner submissions is February 17, 2012. Banners are available to artists of all ages and skill levels.
The Banner Festival Committee will sponsor eight public "paint days" for artists to complete their paintings. Paint days will be held at Jameson Park in Mt. Pleasant on March 10 (9-3 p.m.), March 13-15 (3-7 p.m.), March 17 (9-3 p.m.) and March 20-22 (3-7 p.m.). Paint will be provided. People interested in submitting a design may pick up an entry form at Art Reach or on the Art Reach web site (www.artreachcenter.org). Deadline for submitting entries is February 17, 2012. All banner designs become property of the Festival of Banners. The Signature Sponsors for this community public art event are the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and Union Township. Event sponsors are: The City of Mt. Pleasant, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Isabella Bank, Firstbank, and the Isabella Community Credit Union. For more information on banner art and the Festival of Banners visit www.artreachcenter.org. or call Art Reach at (989) 773-3689
BROADWAY PLAYERS TO PRESENT SIN, SEX & THE CIA
The Broadway Players & the Friends of the Broadway will be presenting Sin, Sex, and the CIA, a farce by Susan & Michael Parker on February 17, 18, 24, & 25 at 7 PM and February 19 & 26 at 2 PM at the Broadway Theatre by Special Arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. The Show is directed by Cindy Kilmer, with Kelsey Lawrence as Assistant director. Tickets will be $8 each and will be on sale in advance at Ace of Diamonds, Ric’s Food Center, on the Friends of the Broadway web site (www.friendsofthebroadway.org), and at the Broadway Box Office approximately 1.5 hours before show time.
Show Synopsis: Huge oil reserves have been discovered in The Chagos Islands. O.P.E.C. is pressuring the Chagosians to join the cartel. A C.I.A. agent and an under Secretary of State, whose life appears to be run by her libido, are sent to a C.I.A. safe house in the mountains of Virginia to begin negotiations for the U.S. to place the Chagos Islands under their protection. Unfortunately, no one knows who the islands' representative really is. We are left to wonder how the C.I.A. agent ever got the job. He gets caught in all his own booby traps, he electrocutes himself, he sets fire to himself, he gets a bucket stuck on his head, and finally locks himself in his own handcuffs! Add to the inevitable chaos, a stranded televangelist, his innocent secretary (or is she?), an ex- marine caretaker, who isn't what he seems to be, and a mysterious, glamorous neighbor, and you have a complex, laugh out loud farce!

LOCAL MAN PUBLISHES COMMENTARY ON YAHOO
COMMENTARY BY MARK CARPENTER, MT PLEASANT, MI | In the circus that is American politics, the first real big top event will take place on January 3, 2012 as Iowans go to the polls for the first Republican caucus of this presidential cycle. I will be following the event closely to see if success in the opinion polls will translate into votes in the caucus. Going in, the top three contenders are Mitt Romney (23 percent), Ron Paul (22 percent), and Rick Santorum (16 percent). I know Mitt Romney of course from 2008. But I really don't know anything about Ron Paul or Rick Santorum except that they have gotten significantly less media time than Romney and a whole bunch of lesser runners in the pack.
SECOND ANNUAL FRIENDS OF THE BROADWAY POETRY CONTEST
The Friends of the Broadway extend an invitation to all area poets to submit poetry to the Second Annual Poetry Contest at the Broadway Theatre on March 3, 2012 at 2:00 PM.
The poetry contest provides an area-wide forum recognizing local writers for their creative writing and performance abilities. Poets are divided into four categories: elementary (2-6), intermediate (7-8), high school (9-12), and adult. Entries in each category will be pre-judged based on the written entry, and complete the judging process through an oral performance.
First, second, and third place entries in each category will receive a cash prize and certificate, with all entries receiving certificates of appreciation. The judging panel includes three judges, chaired by CMU Professor, Anne Alton.
Poems should be no more than forty-two lines and poets may submit no more than two poems. Contestants must perform their poem orally for award consideration. Vulgar or profane language will disqualify the entry. Poetry submissions due by February 21, 2012 and should be sent to West Intermediate School, c/o Jodi Roed, 440 S. Bradley, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858. Entry forms available on the Friends of the Broadway web site at www.friendsofthebroadway.org, the Chippewa River District Library in Mt. Pleasant, and the Downtown Development Office at Mt. Pleasant City Hall.
Mark your calendar, as the Friends of the Broadway encourages family, friends, and community members to attend. The event begins at 2:00 PM with introductions and poetry readings immediately following.
A $500 grant was received by the Friends of the Broadway to support the 2012 Second Annual Broadway Theatre Poetry Contest. The grant was awarded from the Robert and Geraldine Krapohl Literacy Fund, a permanently endowed fund of the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation (MPACF). OCCUPY FOLKS CALLED "PATRIOTS"
A Lansing area columnist, Terry Link, got my attention recently when he identified Occupy participants as "Patriots." We could not agree more. Read Mr. Link's post in THE LANSING CITY PULSE: http://www.lansingcitypulse.com/lansing/article-6790-support-businesses-who-share-the-wealth.html.

EPA DIRECTOR ENDORSES MORE RECYCLING
A statement by EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson (made on the Dr. Oz Show 12/20/2011) is transcribed below....
Here is what they said:
Dr. Oz: " As a last comment, if your goal, which it is, is to make the world a cleaner, healthier place, looking around, what would you do? What is the most important message you could make with us? What is the biggest wish you have ?
Jackson: " Its actually much lower tech than anyone might think. You know, we recycle about 39% of our waste on average the 250 million tons we generate every day. If we would bring that number up, if we would insist on a recycling rate in our country at 80, 85, 90 percent we would do a bunch of things: Certainly, we would have a cleaner environment. We would save a tremendous amount of water and energy. We would create millions of jobs, because recycling, in and of itself, would become a supply chain in our country—a very domestic one.
So although it sounds simple, when you see those recycling bins--when people start to talk about recycling--think of it as a homegrown jobs program and an environmental program and an energy program and a water program all in one. "
RECYCLE MORE when you know more. Visit the Isabella County Recycling website to learn how simple it is to recycle.

SOME FOLKS DON'T HAVE CLEAN WATER TO DRINK
Without access to clean water, Kenya's Kakamega Forest village is particularly vulnerable to disease and hardship. Vestergaard Frandsen's landmark CARBON FOR WATER initiative has provided more than 1 million free Lifestraw family water filters to locals. Watch how clean water is helping a community in Kenya thrive, one drink at a time.
